Description:

TEG provided a variety of services for many different clients on the Southern Beltway project.  The U.S Route 22 to I-79 project consists of constructing 13 miles of new roadway under 9 construction sections.  A large portion of Section 55C1-1 was assisting Abate Irwin (AI) in developing the steel girder erection plan for 3 long multi-span steel girder bridges.  TEG worked with AI to integrate the use of a stiffening truss to eliminate the need for falsework towers during erection.  Another portion of that same section involved the erection of a 2-span prestressed concrete bridge.  TEG developed the erection plan for Golden Triangle to erect and brace the beams.  For Section 55A2, TEG assisted Trumbull Corporation in numerous support of excavation designs for the substructure construction among other engineering tasks. For Section 55C2-1, the I-79 over Southern Beltway section, TEG assisted Walsh Construction with a variety of tasks. Support of excavation designs included a Soil Nail wall supporting I-79, and a Soldier Pile and Lagging wall for new pier construction. TEG furnished a demolition plan for widening bridge SB289, and performed two analyses of existing bridges to carry articulated haulers.

Client:
Brayman Construction Corporation / Advantage Steel
Owner:
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
Description:

TEG provided multiple services for the Koppel bridge replacement. The Koppel bridge is a 1200 ft long multiple span steel girder bridge crossing of the Beaver River. TEG provided the erection plan and calculations which included barge stability analysis for cranes lifting beams, falsework tower designs, and pier bracket falsework designs. For each of the approximately 300 ft spans, TEG analyzed the stability of the individual steel girders and the global system stability at all steps of the erection which prompted the use of a stiffening truss to prevent buckling. Additionally, TEG provided support of excavation and cofferdam design for substructure construction in the river. TEG also performed structural analysis of the existing truss for special construction loading conditions and for the truss demolition plan working around multiple railroads.

The CSVT River Bridge near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was a complex civil engineering project where Pittsburghs Tunstall Engineering applied their expertise to steel erectiin, spreader beams, and more.

Description:

TEG provided a wide variety of services for the CSVT project. Most our involvement was on the CSVT River Bridge, which is a 15 span 4545’ long steel multi-girder bridge over the Susquehanna River in Union/Northumberland Counties north of Harrisburg, PA. TEG provided Century Steel with the steel girder erection plans and calculations. With pier heights near 200’ and spans as long as 350’, the erection required multiple finite element models to verify stability, stresses, and to design temporary lateral bracing. Towers up to 85’ tall, Work Platforms, and Spreader Beams were also designed for the project.

Tunstall Engineering worked with massive SPMT movers to place a large sectio of bridge on the West End of Pittsburgh. Tunstall was the Engineer of Record for the Mammoet SPMT move. Tunstall also handled Alternate Designs for the projects substructure.

TEG also was the Engineer of Record for the SPMT move which required moving both spans hundreds of feet to their final position. The weight of each move was over 330 tons including the superstructure and grillage system.

Owner:
The US Army Corps of Engineers – Huntington District
Description:

The Bluestone Dam Phase 5 Project consisted of installing 5-36’ diameter cofferdams with transition sections between each and at the ends where it tied into the dam and spillway.  The cofferdams were then filled with tremie concrete, stone, and topped with a concrete cap.  Anchors were installed through the cofferdams and spillway monolith into rock below.  TEG assisted Brayman throughout the construction with many designs for access of personnel, materials, and equipment.  Many different types of equipment were loaded onto work barges to move around the site.  Each barge configuration required an analysis to ensure stability and that draft limits were maintained.  Walkways, stairs, railings, tie-off points, and egress platforms were all designed specifically for the site to allow workers easy access and safe working conditions.  Other designs included a site specific swinger crane base mounted on work barges, analysis of the training wall for crane loading while moving materials and equipment onto the work barges, lifting lugs which were mounted to large sections of concrete being removed, and many other engineering requests from Brayman.
